Did You Know?
Earlier, before the invention of razors, women used two shells to grip and pull out hair from their skin.
Women generally have to deal with hair on their legs, underarms, the bikini area, and other parts of the body. There are many hair removing methods available such as waxing, shaving, hair removal creams, and laser treatment. Out of these, shaving is the most reliable method, which is harmless as well as painless. Nowadays, electric razors are available in the market, which make the process a lot easier. These razors are different from the electric shavers for men. Men have rough hair over a small surface area (e.g. beard), while women have soft-textured hair over a wider surface area (e.g. legs, arms, etc.). Therefore, women who wish to buy such razors should know the types and features of various brands of razors and select the ones that are suitable for them.
There are two major types of electric shavers for women. They are foil and rotary shavers.
» Foil Shaver: This shaver consists of several blades set in layers within a rectangular mesh foil. The mesh captures each hair before shaving out the length of that hair. When the captured hair are chopped off, the leftover hair are shrunk back below the skin.
» Rotary Shaver: This shaver usually has 3-4 circular blades on the shaving head. When this shaver is used in a circular motion, the rotating blades pull and chop the hair. It is best suited for longer skin hair in women.
» User-friendly: Electric razors are easy to use, and therefore, they enable shaving at a faster rate.
» Durable: The foil or blade continues to give good results for a long period of time; for example: a year or so, after which it can be replaced with a new one.
» Adjustable: Some of them have adjustable settings for your skin type, shape of your face, etc.
» Convenient: Some cordless shavers are available that can be used according to your own convenience. They can be used anytime, anywhere, indoors or outdoors.
» Dry or Wet Shaving: Most of the shavers are designed for both dry as well as wet shaving. Wet shaving means shaving with a gel, cream, or soap lather, or shaving while in a shower or bath.
» Other Features: Most electric razors need to be charged before using them. The charging takes about one or two hours, and the operating time per charging is about 30 to 50 minutes. In some razors, the recharging time could extend till 8 hours too. But in these razors, the operating time will also be higher than the usual razors. Some shavers have an inbuilt self-cleaning mechanism, which enables them to disinfect themselves when kept for recharging their batteries.
Some of the popular brands that manufacture electric shavers for women are Panasonic, Remington, Conair, Braun, and Philips Norelco. Following are three of the top-selling electric razors for women:
» Panasonic ES2216P Close Curves Wet/Dry Ladies' Shaver
This is a four-blade, twin-head shaving system having stainless steel, hypoallergenic blades that give a smooth shave without causing any irritation. The blades are designed to give an ultra-close shaving experience. The shaver is fully immersible and is good to be used in and out of the shower.
» Remington WDF-7000CS Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaver for Women
This shaver comes with a titanium technology, and is said to be the first women's electric shaver with a cleaning system. The blades are coated with titanium and are enclosed in two gold-plated hypoallergenic safe screens, which prevent the skin from getting injured. The shaver can be used for both wet and dry shaving, where all the unwanted hair can be removed without causing any razor burn.
» Conair LWD375GCS Satiny Smooth Ladies' Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaver
This shaver has twin independent floating blades and foils. It charges quite fast, and can be used continuously at a stretch of up to half an hour. It can also be used for wet as well as dry shaving.
Cost and Maintenance
The cost can be as low as USD 20 and as high as USD 150 and above. However, the price is usually less compared to a men's shaver. You can get a decent-quality shaver between USD 30 and USD 80. Also, keep in mind that the prices will vary from one store to another, and in cases where there are discounts on a particular model.
An electric shaver must be cleaned regularly. Usually, a cleaning brush is provided with the shaver, but there are a few shavers that come with inbuilt cleaning systems. Replace the foil as and when required, and always follow the product manual for cleaning as well as safety instructions.
Tips for Buying an Electric Razor
» Always opt for a cordless electric razor, which is easily portable.
» You may also choose a shaver that comes with its own auto cleaning-charging dock. This will help in easy maintenance of proper hygiene.
» Watch out for extra features like battery indicator, LCD displays, pivoting heads for body contours, water resistance, and moisturizer dispenser.
» Look for what is included in your electric razor. Some razors include extra batteries, extra chargers, traveling kits, and cleaning tools.
» Before buying, check how often you need to replace the blades, the cost of replacing the blades, the easy availability of spare parts, and the warranty period.
» Opt for high-speed shavers since they give optimum performance.
» Always go in for a renowned brand, which has been in the market for long time with maximum positive reviews.
According to consumer surveys, some women preferred foil shavers compared to rotary shavers because they gave ultra-smooth shaves with less skin irritation. Hence, it has become a must-have gadget for many women all over the world.
