Almost everyone faces the problem of whiteheads and blackheads, especially during their teenage. Though whiteheads on face are not at all harmful, they hold the capacity of blemishing the entire facial complexion! What are whiteheads exactly? How do they get formed? Let us find out more information about this.

How are Whiteheads Formed?

Whiteheads and blackheads belong to the same class of comedones. These are nothing but black-tipped plugs which block the pores of the skin. Whiteheads are formed when a hair follicle gets obstructed by an oily layer of the skin, known as sebum. As the follicles are obstructed, dead skin does not get expelled, which causes a whitehead. In contrast to blackheads, whiteheads are closed comedones, as the air cannot reach the follicle and it remains white. They are smaller in size than the blackheads. The reason why they are seen mostly during the teenage is that the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, are most active during this period. Over-active sebaceous glands can also increase the level of the hormone androgen, which in turn increases the production of sebum.

Whiteheads are generally so small that they are not visible to the naked eye. It is only when they start transforming into pimples, do they become visible. And as they can worsen by forming pimples, it becomes necessary to treat them as soon as possible. As we know, getting rid of pimples can be a herculean task! The face is the most common place for an outbreak. The nose, chin, and forehead are the most common places where they are seen. However, they can also occur on the shoulders and thighs.

Home Remedies

There are natural, herbal, chemical, as well mechanical ways of getting rid of whiteheads. One should follow the most suitable treatment for proper skin care.

Steam: Steam is one of the most effective ways to remove whiteheads. Wash your face with a face cleanser before taking steam. Now heat water and take steam for about 10-15 minutes, or as much time as you can bear. As soon as you finish taking steam, take a dry cotton towel and gently but firmly, squeeze the area where the whitehead is located. You can also use a whitehead removal tool for this purpose.

Vinegar: Vinegar helps to get rid of many things ranging from fruit flies to whiteheads! Take vinegar in a bowl and add cornstarch to it. Make a paste and apply it on the affected area. Let it stay for 15-20 minutes and then wash it off. This paste helps to dry the oil on the skin, which helps to prevent the whiteheads further. The paste of sandalwood and water is also said to be effective. Sandalwood has an extra benefit of making the skin soft and also has a cooling sensation.

Fenugreek: Fenugreek is not only meant for eating, it is also useful for whitehead removal. Make a paste of fenugreek leaves and water. Apply this paste on the face while sleeping at night, because it needs to be left overnight on the skin. In the morning, remove it with the help of a damp warm cloth. This will help you to get rid of not only whiteheads, but also blackheads and pimples.

Honey: Mix 1tbsp honey with an egg white and apply it evenly on the face. Wash it after half an hour. You will not only get rid of whiteheads, but also get glowing skin. Applying only honey can also prove to be an effective solution.

Preventing whiteheads is always better than getting rid of them. All you need to do is follow a healthy lifestyle. Drink lots of water, eat healthy food, and sleep well. Also, do not forget to wash your face at least twice a day, to get that blemish-free, gorgeous face. Take care!
