A cold can keep you busy with frequent sneezing, blowing nose, and cough. It may cause bloodshot eyes that are puffy, and a chapped nose, due to constant sneezing and blowing. A chapped nose is almost unavoidable, if you get a cold; especially during winters, when the entire skin gets dry. Even though it is a minor problem, a chapped nose can be painful and look unpleasant too. Usually, this condition does not need any medication; as it resolves on its own, within a few days. A chapped nose can be relieved with some home remedies.
A chapped nose can be prevented, if you take sufficient care, well in advance. During winters, you have to concentrate more on moisturizing your skin. Drink lots of water, and use a scarf to protect the facial skin, when you go out. If you get a common cold, then, increase the water intake. One of the main culprits that contribute to a chapped nose is the rough tissues or paper towels, that you use for blowing your nose. So, use soft tissues, especially the lotion-infused ones. It will be better to use such tissues, at the very onset of cold, so as to prevent dryness of the skin around the nose. It has been observed that most people switch over to soft towels, only after getting a chapped nose.
- Adequate use of moisturizers is the most important factor. Petroleum jelly is highly effective for relieving a chapped nose. Apply it regularly at night before sleep, so as to heal the chapped skin on the nose. You may also use it before going out during winters.
- Use of body oils may also prove beneficial. Apply a few drops on the nose, after bath. You may also use it every time, after blowing the nose. Try to bathe with warm water; don't go for long showers, that can dry the skin further.
- Try to use a moisturizing soap. Use a humidifier in your house, especially in your bedroom, during winters. It can provide the moisture, that can speed up healing of the chapped nose.
- Aloe vera gel can also be effective for this purpose. Apply it on the nose at regular intervals, so that it can be healed at the earliest. You may also try vitamin E, which is readily available in the form of capsules and oil.
- Soak a washcloth in cold water. Squeeze the water and place the cloth on the nose. This will alleviate the pain and promote healing.
- Steam inhalation may prove effective in relieving the condition. Exposure to steam triggers secretion of natural oils from the skin, thereby healing the condition.
