Acne is one of the most troublesome conditions experienced by people all over the world. Although not limited to it, the condition is commonly found in women and in teenagers. Acne are small red pimples that spread all over the face. Acne can be caused due to a variety of reasons, like hormonal changes, diet, stress, improper lifestyle, etc. According to recent studies, it has been found that acne can also be triggered due to insulin resistance.
What is Insulin Resistance
Before knowing whether insulin resistance is a cause of acne or not, let us first know what exactly is insulin resistance. The term insulin is often associated with diabetes. However, resistance to insulin can also lead to several other disorders and trigger acne. The person is said to suffer from insulin resistance if the body does not respond to the normal level of insulin in the body. In that case, the insulin is ineffective in lowering the blood sugar levels. This condition can be caused due to several factors like diet, sedentary lifestyle, etc. Insulin resistance is one of the factors that can cause acne. Let us take a look at it in detail.
Insulin Resistance Causes Acne
Acne is caused due to over production of sebum in the skin. Sebum is actually an oil which keeps the skin smooth and supple. The oily skin surface provides a favorable environment for bacteria which gives rise to pimples. Accumulation of dead skin and hair follicles at a particular place is also one of the reasons for causing acne. Insulin resistance has been proven as one of the factors that leads to excess oil production in the skin. Therefore, it indirectly leads to acne.
On the other hand, the high levels of insulin in the body is also believed to trigger off the male hormones in females, i.e., androgen. Androgen is present in males as well as females. Even in normal conditions, this hormone can trigger acne. Therefore, if the level of androgen rises, it leads to acne in women. High levels of androgen also increase the production of sebum or the oil under the skin. Therefore, either way, insulin resistance is proven to be one of the causes for acne in men and women.
Treating the causes of insulin resistance can help in treating acne caused due to it. As mentioned above, having a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar is one of the major causes of insulin resistance. Therefore, in order to treat acne, one should have a diet that is low in refined carbohydrates and sugar. Foods like white bread, white pasta, white rice, etc. should be avoided. As a sedentary lifestyle also increases the risk of insulin resistance, it is essential to undertake some form of exercise every day.
Thirdly, if the condition is caused due to obesity, you should reduce some weight first by following a proper diet and exercise regime. It should also be noted that insulin resistance can also be caused due to some underlying disease and disorder, which needs to be treated immediately.
Acne can be treated with the help of medication, home remedies, and also by making changes in one's lifestyle. However, it is essential to consult the doctor and find out the exact cause of acne before looking for any treatment method. Take care!
