Think of acne scars and the first thing that comes to your mind is how to remove them. Many teenagers and even adults all over the world tend to suffer from acne. No matter whatever you have done to treat them, they always recur giving you ugly scars. So what can you do? Plastic surgery seems to be the last resort in such a situation.
Before digging deeper into our knowledge of plastic surgery for rectifying acne scars, we will have to know what actually is acne. Acne is a rash that usually occurs on the face. It mainly happens when the glands in the facial skin get blocked and inflamed. This condition can cause disfiguration and as a result depression to a number of people. Hence, acne control becomes necessary. Serious and permanent scarring can be a result of severe acne. In case of teenagers, acne lessens by the time they are in their twenties. But acne in women can extend up to their forties and fifties.
Causes of Acne
Now, you may want to know what causes acne. Sebum, an oily substance, is secreted by the sebaceous glands of the skin. Overrun of sebum leads to acne. Normally, the skin is kept lubricated and supple by sebum which drains into the hair follicles and flows out through the follicle openings on the skin’s surface. But, the follicles get blocked once the glands produce excess sebum. If sebum in the follicle openings remains clogged, it will harden and become dark. As a result blackheads can form. Again in some cases, a tough fibrous protein produced by the skin cells, called keratin, seals the follicles when it is present in excess. The sebum which is trapped turns into white lumps, called whiteheads. In both the cases, there is multiplication of bacteria which leads to inflammation of the surrounding tissues.
During puberty, acne is believed to be caused by increased sensitivity to androgens which are actually male sex hormones. They are present in both boys and girls and during puberty their levels are raised. Besides genetic factors, hormonal disorders such as Cushing’s syndrome and hormonal fluctuations that occur during the menstrual cycle may also be counted amongst the causes of acne.
Plastic Surgery for Getting Rid of Acne Scars
Surgery is seen as the last resort when all other normal treatments for acne are rendered inadequate. No doubt, a surgery is a drastic step in connection to acne scar removal but in some cases it is the only way to remove them. So, it is better to opt for it only when other acne skin care products and acne treatment at home fails.
Before going for plastic surgery for scars, there are few things to be noted. The procedure may not always be a success and the scars may return even after doing so, besides being very costly. Before thinking of opting for it, make sure that you are not suffering from any other illness. In some cases, natural acne cures can be effective. But it takes much longer to get any noticeable results especially if it is a deep acne scar. For such situations, plastic surgery can be helpful in removing acne scar and even improve the quality of the skin. Most of the time, the surgery is often followed by home topical medications along with chemicals. This helps to develop better results in a short period of time. But you cannot always be sure of the technique, since it is limited and you cannot be sure of a perfect skin even after such a drastic step.
So you see, plastic surgery for acne scars cannot always be described as a success story. Try other methods like chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, soft tissue augmentation, etc. If you don’t get favorable results after trying other procedures for acne scar removal, you may have to opt for it.
